Using their Imagination

Do you remember having an imagination as a child? When I was a kid, we lived in the hills. There were nothing but mountains around us and that gave us the best place to play. My friends and I would play army all day every day. We were even outfitted in all of our army gear. We had camouflage clothing, helmets, play guns, we had it all. The hills provided us with the best places to build our forts and have fake wars with each other.

Lately, I have been noticing the imagination of my kids. Just yesterday my little one was outside playing on the deck. I watched her up by the railing and pretending like she was ordering food and proceeded to eat her fake food.

After that, both of my girls were playing like they were at school. They were sitting in the living room “crisscross apple sauce” is what the older girl said. That’s where you sit Indian style. Then they sat there and raised their hands and were both asking questions to a fake teacher.

It made me really happy to see them using their imaginations. It brought back a lot of memories from when I was a kid. I wish I could still use my imagination like that. Now, I just use my imagination thinking of ways to fix something or how great life would be if my ex wife just up and left us alone. I gotta admit, the thought of that enters my imagination quite a bit.

  • Kids have great imaginations, don’t they? I wish I hadn’t lost my kid imagination along the way to where I’m at now. I used to sit and make up stories when I was a kid and entertain the neighborhood kids. I wonder when and why I lost that imagination?
I can picture you playing army in the hills with your friends. It sounds like your imagination served you well and you had a blast.

  • Great Minds Think Alike eh? Thanks for the kind words ;-)

  • Those are actually some of the fondest memories I have as a child. What great times they were. Unfortunately I think we lose our imagination with age. We don’t even really think about it at all. One minute, we are using our imagination to its fullest. The next, we are all adults working real jobs and paying real bills.
